This is my flagship project — a fully custom WordPress website I built from the ground up. I designed the theme, developed so! much! custom! functionality! and templates with custom post types and Advanced Custom Fields. I also integrated tools like MailChimp with clever content-locking to drive newsletter sign-ups, a Patreon paywall, and Google AdSense to help generate some revenue.
The site now brings in significant monthly revenue and supports a dedicated newsletter of 5,000+ subscribers with an exceptional 40% open rate. I also continue to grow an Instagram following @TotalCaskills of 9,000+ highly engaged hikers.
Every trail guide, article, and photo on the site is produced by me. The credibility I’ve built with this project led directly to my ongoing column with the Times Union.
This is a complex, community-focussed and funded platform. It’s been a deep hands-on education in the kind of digital craftsmanship I now bring to my client work.
